Pass Pro Punch Drill

Learning how to punch + dampen in the pass protection drill

Programming Approach

  1. Use max effort training to stimulate the neural network of absolute strength

  2. Coach the proper punch until athlete “finds it”

  3. Immediately perform repeated efforts to encode the punch into the neural network of absolute strength

  4. Film to identify specific technical issues for accessory work

Pass Protection Punch Drill Analysis

Video analysis showed the lineman learning to dampen force during pass pro punching. His first punch dissipated force suboptimally + he appeared smaller and didn’t engage his tissue properly. His second punch demonstrated proper dampening with visible lat engagement and force transfer.

Key technical issues identified:

  • Foot positioning: Athletes rolling onto inside of foot instead of maintaining tripod base

  • Ankle mechanics: Losing dorsiflexion and heel position, which prevents tissue loading

  • Hand contact: Landing with improper hand structure (not fully pronated)

  • Recovery position: Not sitting back down after initial contact to prepare for defender’s second move
